A Surprising Way to Build Stronger Families at Work and Home

My Personal Story.

Years ago my mentor taught me to help my employees when they were at their lowest.

If they had a death in the family, stop your schedule and have your team support the grieving employee, attend the funeral, whatever it takes.

I now try to do the same to support my clients.

With our large client base (over half a billion in revenue represented in our peer group community) we touch a lot of lives!

Clients share many heart-wrenching stories: going through divorce, facing up to cancer (and besting it) and worse.

No need for fiction:

Life is strange enough when you take the time to hear what’s really going on in people’s lives.

The Silver Lining – A Personal Story

As I shared previously, my mom came down with A.L.S. seven years ago, and we started meeting weekly by zoom every Sunday morning to support her.

The weekly commitment:

  • We would give updates, and invite long lost relatives to join us.
  • Even when my mom could no longer speak, or gesture, we kept it up.
  • She passed away this summer and we continue our Sundays zooms, now to support my dad and each other.

The benefits are numerous, including family members who don’t always get along are now talking every week.

After my mom passed, we decided to meet with my dad daily by zoom, for 15 min each morning.

Daily commitment:

  • We say a little prayer in honor of my mom (The Kaddish), and then pick a different mom-related topic to discuss.
  • It’s not an easy commitment; we don’t all believe the same things except that we need to do this together.
  • We often go over fifteen minutes.

Bringing Family Together

We are five siblings plus my dad meeting every day; along with occasional guests.

We are committed to doing this for 12 months with my dad.

It’s been a life saver, and a life changer.

Your challenge—find a new way to support your employees and of course your own family.

  1. What can you do to change and sustain the relationships in your family?
  2. What can you do to support your employees’ families?

It all starts with a small action every day or week.

Like anything important in the world, it all starts with you!

Carpe Diem!

Regards, Jeffrey Scott
