The Pivotal Role of the Second-In-Command

Oct 29, 2024 | Blog, Planning, Productivity, Strategy

As a visionary business owner, it is impossible to grow a company by yourself.

You need a solid team of leaders in key positions – and often you need a buffer position titled “Second in Command” (2IC).

A 2IC’s role is to filter and implement your visionary ideas and to keep the trains running on time–while growing the organization and its people.

For that reason, I am placing a link (below) to my brand-new podcast on this topic. “The pivotal role of a second in command.”

This podcast is unique in that I interviewed two people at once.

  1. Desiree Bouchard, the GM of Great Lakes Landscape Design, MI
  2. Sean Baxter owner of Lawn and Landscape Solutions in KC (and Executive Coach at our company)

You get to hear both perspectives:

  • How the owner views the important work of the 2IC, and
  • How a 2IC thinks about their relationship with their owner.

This exciting back and forth makes it one of our better podcasts!

A little bit about Desiree Bouchard.

She joined the business as a part time admin assistant and quickly rose through the ranks, ultimately to become the GM, where she brings stability and accountability to the organization.

Desiree oversaw the company rebranding and doubling in size. Moreover, to support growth she and the team completely moved its operations last year (in June) without skipping a beat.

I have worked with their leadership team, and coached Desiree and her boss for about five years now on their journey to dominate their market. They make a good team!

You can listen to this podcast on my website, or on Apple or on Spotify.
